First established in the mid-1950s, Sherwood Park was originally a small community whose sole purpose was to house industrial employees from nearby Refinery Row. Since then, this flourishing city is now home to over 70,000 people and become a top choice for growing families looking for a safe and friendly place to call home.
1. Affordable Home Prices
Sherwood Park has many affordable home styles to choose from - including apartment condos, townhomes, duplexes and single-family homes. Due to the city’s popularity among families, however, detached single-family homes reign supreme and include older, updated properties, brand new builds (and everything in between). Average prices in the area typically range between the late $300’s and early $400’s.
2. An Outdoor Lover’s Delight
Sherwood Park is also highly regarded for its natural beauty. Thanks to its abundance of walking and cycling trails, open green spaces and natural wetland reserves, residents here enjoy ample opportunity to get outside. Local neighbourhoods are also extremely walkable and characterized by parks, playgrounds, storm ponds and, in many cases, mature trees.
3. There’s Always Something to Do
From farmer’s markets and festivals to playgroups and winery tours, Sherwood Park hosts a wide variety of events, programs and year-round activities to suit every age, interest and lifestyle. There are also several recreation centres in the area (including the ultra-popular Millennium Place), offering an array fitness amenities and family-friendly programs.
See the city’s Recreation and Events page for more information.
4. All the Amenities
Sherwood Park provides residents with a unique blend of chain stores and boutique shops. Among the many shopping districts in the area, notable destinations include Emerald Hills Centre (Wal Mart, Canadian Tire, PetSmart and more) as well as Sherwood Park Mall (featuring a variety of clothing stores, salon services and major box retailers such as Indigo, Safeway and Shopper’s Drug Mart).
5. Outstanding Schools
The city is also home to a broad range of highly accredited schools and learning programs. Primary and secondary schooling options are overseen by three independent boards: Elk Island Public Schools, Elk Island Catholic Schools and Conseil scolaire Centre-Nord. From pre-kindergarten to high school, parents moving to the Park will have peace of mind knowing their child’s needs will be taken care of.
6. Easy Accessibility
Whether you work downtown or out of town, Sherwood Park makes commuting easy. Immediately to the north sits the Yellowhead Hwy, which provides streamlined access both to north Edmonton and surrounding the areas.
The city is also divided by two major thoroughfares, leading directly to both the east Anthony Henday and Edmonton city centre - these include Baseline Road (101 Ave) and Wye Road (Sherwood Park Fwy/ 82nd Ave). Hwy 21 (bordering to the east) offers a swift transition to Hwy 628 (Whitemud Drive) and the Yellowhead.
7. A Welcoming Community
Last but not least, Sherwood Park has been well recognized for its friendly and tight-knit community values. For this reason, the city has created numerous programs and services to help “engage and empower people of all ages and situations.” These programs include family, youth, senior and newcomer initiatives, as well as resources for learning, well-being and mental health and a whole lot more.
